Places to see in Hisar

Location and history

Earlier it was spelt as Hissar, it is a city based on Harappan culture in the state of Haryana. Founded by the great ruler, Firoze Shah Tughlaq, the name Hissar means fortress in the Turkish language. Hisar is said to have been connected with the ancient Vedic tribes. Today it is the main cotton industry of India. One of the most renowned educational institutions, the Hissar Agricultural Institute is located here. It was also called Hissar-e- Firoza which means the fort of Feroz. The town of Hisar is located about 162 km. from Delhi, the capital city of India.

Places of interest

The Palace of Feroze Shah and the fort built by him is a remarkable place of visit. There is an underground chamber and also a mosque within the palace. Nearby the mosque lies the site of the ruins of the Harappan civilization. The Palace has its own beauty and charm. The Lat Ki Masjid is an outstanding structure representing the Suljuk style but the grid style is taken from the Hindu culture. Its unique style of lithic pillar and square chamber makes it different from the other mosques. The mosque is a L-shaped mosque which is also a rare thing.

The Humayun�s mosque was also built by the emperor which is also a peaceful and charming place to visit. Another interesting place to visit is the Jahaz Kothi, a magnificent palace with a Mughlai touch. Jahaz Sahib was the Irish ruler who asked the mughal rulers to build a palace for him. The Gujri Mahal is a palace made of stone and it in ruins now but its raised platform which was used for social gatherings is still in good form. Just outside the fort is the Jain Pillar which is about 2ft. in height with the diamond shaped symbol on the top. It is regarded very sacred by the Jains.

There are still some ruins of the Harappan Civilization present in the form of three mounds at Banavali, Kunal and Agroha. All the three sites show some or the other important relevant facts of the Harappan Civilization. Banavali shows the ruins of an ancient township. The three stages of development of the civilization can be seen at Kunal and the reveals the discovery of coins in the third century B.C. the tomb of the great Sufi saint Pranpir Badshah is situated inside the Government College of Hisar is also a tourist site.
