Durgapur Tour

Steel city Durgapur has brought India in the light of industrialization. Great thinker Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy dreamt to make Durgapur an apparent industrial town. Joseph Allen Stein and Benjamin Polk designed the well laid industrial township. Hindustan Steel Limited has established third steel plant in this city of eastern India which effectively changed the rural Durgapur into industrialized city.

Durgapur houses integrated alloy steel plants of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) and CSIR laboratory. Besides having a number of power plants, chemical and engineering industries Durgapur is a centre of higher learning with institutes like National Institute of Technology and many other Engineering and Technological Education Institutions.

Climate

The climate of the district is always transitional. The climate is well classified as 'tropical savanna climates' with warm temperate rainy climates with dry winter. The average temperature ranges between 37.8 �C and 46.1 �C while in winter the maximum temperature is 29.4 �C and rises to a maximum of 32.2 �C. Average rainfall is 150 millimetres.

Places to visit in Durgapur

Bhabani Pathak's Tilla

It is a knoll near Durgapur and was connected with Damodar River by a network of tunnels. People can visit only the mount.

Rahreswar Shiv Mandir

This is 800 years old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The complex is situated on the Muchipara-Shibpur road.

Durgapur Barrage

Durgapur is situated on the bank of the Damodar River. A barrage is built to control the flow of Damodar and is a popular tourist spot. Visiting Durgapur barrage in monsoons is sheer joy. You can also have pleasure of a boat ride through it.

Business centres in Durgapur

Durgapur has two main commercial centres, one is Benachity and another is city centre.

Benachity

Benachity is the oldest business place of Durgapur. This 3 Km long street has small compact and closely attached shops on both sides of road. Its shops sell merchandise in whole sale or we may say that it is a whole sale market. Besides small shops this huge commercial area of Durgapur has branches of all the banks. Now a day Benachity is going for a facelift and these compact shops are turning out into new multi-storeyed building. The narrow streets are very congested and busy so parking is a big problem here.

City Centre

City Centre is the central commercial hub in the city. It has malls, shopping arcades, Cineplex...restaurants! all this makes it popular hangout place for youngsters inspite of being the costliest area of the city. The heart of the town has offices of many business establishment, branches of banks as well as well planned residential setup.

Places around Durgapur

Durgapur is surrounded by Asansol, Chittranjan, Jaidev, the birthplace of famous Bengali Vaishnava poet Jaidev; Shantiniketan having International University founded by Rabindranath Tagore and ancient city Vishnupur known for temples and terra-cotta sculpture.
